Adelaide, South Australia, is steadily developing it’s reputation as the new work shed of rousing and relatable alternative rock. Five-piece The Max Headroom have heard the rallying riffs of their South Australian counterparts and have rolled up the garage door on their spirited single Working.
Formed in early 2018 they made their live debut in March the same year. Guitarist/keyboardist Marcus Kernahan along with drummer Pat Kernahan, initially conceived Working when they played as a two piece throughout 2015. After the inception of the band in early 2018 the song was brought to the fold with extra bass and rhythm layers added. The lyrics were written by lead singer Ben Martin, the lyrics reflect a very interesting time in his life, a difficult cross road of leaving valuable things behind whilst looking optimistically towards the future.
The small place that’s mentioned can be anything that you can relate it to, it’s about leaving a place where you felt at home and having to leave certain people alongwith it. – Ben Martin, Singer/Lyricist
The group’s sound has been described as “driving, gritty, in-your-face alternative rock”. The constant changing of instruments between members adds to the dynamic of the group and makes for an unmissable live show. They played support for The Pretty Littles on the Adelaide leg of their Skeleton run tour, before releasing their debut single Echo in November of 2018.
A band of great dexterity and commitment to doing the hard yards, Working is the The Max Headroom’s dedication to growth and grit, taking the exultant licks of Holy Holy and grounding it with the brash charm of West Thebarton. Australian alternative rock has never been so promising and The Max Headroom have written the single to ensure that this elevation of integrity and impassioned melody are the key parts to kick any rock and roll show into gear.
