Claye’s songwriting gift has resulted in him writing hits for the likes of Sean Paul, Chip and Aloe Blacc, but the UK-based,Kingston-born artist has put the spotlight back on himself.
Now Claye again raises his game with his new album ‘Medicine’, which will be released on January 31st. Aside from some carefully curated guest features, Claye wrote, produced and performed everything on the album.
“I’ve always been fond of story-telling and word-play however complex or simple, especially when it comes to love songs, and I believe I have a remedy. A medicine for love songs” says Claye.
Claye has launched the album by sharing the new song ‘Walls’. A romantic and timeless R&B ballad, ‘Walls’ finds Claye supporting his silky, passionate vocal harmonies with naturalistic piano which underlines the song’s lovelorn message.
Collectively, ‘Medicine’ stirs genres at will with a rush of Island flavor further infused by elements of contemporary R&B, reggae and pop. It’s unified by Claye’s eclectic voice, which seemingly effortlessly floats from boisterous to party-starting to tender and affectionate and back again. You can hear his songwriting pedigree throughout, with hooks that quickly embed themselves into the memory.
While the singles demonstrate Claye’s strength as a one-man force, his also excels when calling on some featured guests. Early album highlight ‘Bamboo’ is later reprised with a remix featuring Ayo Beatz, whose dynamic bars once again elevate the track’s energy. Elsewhere, Doktor brings the dancehall vibe to the global-facing ‘Body Language’, J Spades adds reggae-tinged raps to the sunshine grooves of ‘Cure’, and the Costa Rican artist Mar Villarreal simmers with soul and sensuality on the duet ‘Green Light’.
Claye’s first big break came when he signed a publishing deal with Roc-Nation. His biggest hit to date came when he co-wrote Sean Paul’s ‘Hold My Hand’ – a track which has passed 50 million streams and featured on the Grammy-nominated album ‘Imperial Blaze’. Claye’s other credits include collabs with Chip, Aloe Blacc, Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel, Ky-Mani Marley, Busy Signal and Michael Patrick Kelly.
