If you’re lucky, you might experience a time in your life when everything falls magically into place to create a moment and a memory that feels absolutely perfect. That’s exactly what happened when Megan McKenna stepped up to perform her original song ‘This’ on the final of ‘The X Factor: Celebrity’. The passion and power of her voice filled the room and the airwaves, leaving Megan uncharacteristically lost for words shortly before winning the competition.
With over half a million streams across DSPs in just two weeks, including the number 1 on itunes on the day of release, the video for ‘This’ was filmed at the Asylum Chapel in Peckham. It reveals a raw and emotional performance from a reflective Megan with a sprinkling of magic and positivity.
Megan explains, “I chose an abandoned chapel because I wanted to create an ethereal mood for this video. Churches are places of honesty and vulnerability so I felt like that was the perfect environment, to show myself opening up to the world and going on my journey. It’s a very stripped back, emotional performance which shows me finally getting a breakthrough and seeing a bit of light. The glitter represents all the magical things happening in my life and symbolises my emotions. It’s like a wild ride on a rollercoaster but ends on a positive note with the realisation that I’m just a normal vulnerable girl who wants her dreams to come true.”
‘This’ is the first step in a big year for Megan McKenna. She spent much of 2020 making the most of a bad situation by dedicating much of her time to songwriting with huge hitmakers including Toby Gad (John Legend, Beyonce), Mozella (Miley Cyrus, Ellie Goulding, Kelly Clarkson) & Amy Wadge (Ed Sheeran, Camilla Cabello). The result is a collection of material which will elevate her career to new heights as 2021 unfolds.
While music has always been Megan’s prime passion, she first came to prominence as a television personality. Yet it wasn’t until 2017’s ‘There’s Something About Megan’ that we really explored the person behind the public persona. The show saw her travel to Nashville to experience the country music scene that she’d always loved and introduced her talents as a musician for the first time.
The show’s success resulted in her debut country album ‘Story Of Me’. Released in 2018, it debuted at #1 on iTunes, knocking Taylor Swift and Pink off the top of the charts. The following year she won ‘The X Factor: Celebrity’, her performances firing her into the iTunes Top 5 during every week of the competition.
Megan has proven her talents in the live arena too, completing two nationwide headline tours plus huge outdoor shows with the likes of Michael Bublé, Alanis Morissette and Ronan Keating. She’s booked to play the main stage at the Isle of Wight festival this summer, and is also scheduled to support Lionel Richie on his upcoming UK tour.
