With over 20 million streams to date, praise from Lewis Capaldi and Sir Elton John, and key airplay at Radio 1, Radio 2, BBC Introducing and Apple Music 1, Charlotte Jane has set the foundations to make a big breakthrough in 2022. With several summer shows with Rag’n’Bone Man already announced, the next step in her rise now starts as she shares the brand new single ’10 Percent’ along with its official video.
’10 Percent’ finds the 23-year-old displaying the exceptional vocal talent which is sure to connect with a wider global audience as the year unfolds. In a song which says a final climactic goodbye to a non-committal love interest, Charlotte Jane displays empowerment, pain and disappointment in equal measure. But from that whirlwind of emotions, an invigorating feeling of optimism for greater things to come emerges.
It’s also a song in which Charlotte Jane integrates timeless songwriting with moody, electro-tinged production which is perfectly at home within the contemporary pop landscape. Charlotte Jane wrote ’10 Percent’ with Oscar Scheller, Marcus White and Swedish duo Teddy Failure, who also produced the track.
Charlotte Jane says, “‘10%’ Is a song that’s pushed me out of my comfort zone – it’s about cutting out guys who don’t put in the level of effort that you deserve to receive. It’s about realising your self-worth and not settling for less anymore. It’s also the song that’s responsible for me wanting to dance again. I danced throughout my whole childhood but I stopped because I became so self-conscious about my body. I set myself the goal of dancing in this music video to try and overcome a lot of those insecurities, which is something that terrified me at first but now I feel like I’ve reclaimed a part of myself that stopped me dancing in the past.”
The idea of gaining confidence through self-worth is evident in the song’s music video. A love interest bashes on Charlotte Jane’s door in search of forgiveness, but she holds firm and refuses to answer. Her resolution remains steadfast, while her audacious choreography is symbolic of the growing realisation of her empowerment. The video was directed by RebekahBCreative (Becky Hill, KAMILLE, Ivorian Doll) and it was produced by Maneet Sandhu.
Charlotte Jane first became enamoured with music when her grandparents, a soul covers duo, encouraged her early interest in performing. When her family moved from Hull to Singapore, she delved into songwriting to channel her loneliness into something more creative. She then embarked on an incredible journey which has taken her around the UK and to LA to work with some of the world’s top producers and songwriters.
Early releases including ‘Down Days’, ‘All My Life’ and ‘Nervous’ saw Charlotte Jane organically rise, her tastemaker attention complemented by shows with Lewis Capaldi, Dennis Lloyd, Lily Moore and Jess Glynne as well as festivals including Reading, Leeds, Isle of WIght, TRSNMT and Latitude. As her reputation in her homeland flourished, she also gained traction across Europe too. She picked up a first wave of radio in Germany, and featured on the ‘Playlist’ album and book project from the nation’s best-selling author Sebastian Fitzek. She also made an initial impact in Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Austria and Greece.
