Berlin-based German-Cameroonian artist Devantier Rain introduces “MONSTER, the opening track from his forthcoming album MELATONIN. Blending rap with R&B and psychedelic soul textures, the track sets a reflective tone with stripped-back production and intimate lyrics that feel like a message never sent.
“One of the most laid-back songs on the project, ‘Monster’ builds its atmosphere from the bare bones of its instrumental,” says Devantier.
Lyrically, the track explores the emotional distance between two people who once felt close — the unsettling experience of watching someone become a stranger. “It’s deeply personal, almost like a diary entry,” he adds.
The song was produced and recorded at celest*’s home studio in Berlin. Months later, while visiting London, Devantier played the track for longtime friend and collaborator Tamaerebi, who immediately connected with its mood and message. “I knew the song needed a shift in tone,” Devantier recalls, “and Tamaerebi’s verse added a whole new layer of intimacy.”
“This one’s a bit of a fever dream,” says Tamaerebi. “We’d talked about making something for a while, and when he came to London, it just clicked. For me, Monster is about the chaos we create for ourselves — the beauty in surrendering to it. I just want it to find the people it’s meant for.”
