Negativehate

Solipsis is one of those albums you need to listen to from beginning to end, not cherry picking tracks.  It flows so smoothly through the seven tracks, you feel entranced by their mesmeric guitars and atmospheric synths.  Though Negativehate started out as an industrial band inspired by NIN and Godflesh, they are now more akin to Dream Theater.  Songs like “Beyond Aurora” build the layers of sound while switching between clean and harsh vocal styles.  Similarly “Don’t Wake What You Create” layers an ambient backdrop with the sharp, clear guitar work.

The lengthy track “Expansion of the Universe” is the centerpiece of Solipsis, their fifth outing so far.  It ranges from driving guitar rages to gentle vocals and ambient tones.  By comparison, the relatively short “Waltzing on Algorithms” (less than 2 minutes) is an intriguing experiment in complex performance.  Finishing out the album is “Hyperborean Fields”, a stunningly emotional tune that almost leaves you breathless.  Slowly building the theme, the band plays with variations throughout the 11 minute track.  Produced by Neil Dorfsman and Paul Antonell, Solipsis is a stellar release.  Negativehate is the band to watch for progressive metal.
