The Green Door
If you’ve been yearning for a stimulating new sound that hearkens back to 60s rock and roll, The Green Door may be your ticket. Seriously psychedelic with a 60s acid rock sound, their new release reminds one of Jefferson Airplane with a Spaghetti Western atmosphere. In addition, The Green Door combines all that with a garage band style that channels the wild west. Especially as envisioned by Quentin Tarantino or Sergio Leone. Their new EP Wolf in the Fold opens up a vista as wide as a John Ford western.
“You Won’t Hear That Anymore” stands out as the guitars crash their way through solid rhythm section. With its driving pace, the song strikes out into the badlands, eschewing the ‘ball and chain’ of ordinary life. The title track utilizes some surf guitar style while the organ provides a tasty backdrop for this tale of the old west. Seeming to invoke the images of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” series (which, in turn, took its inspiration from The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), eerie organ waves merge with haunting guitar passages on “Borderland”. I particularly liked “Back to Houston”, a bouncy ballad with lots of reverb. If you want a trip to a mythical West, be sure to check out Wolf in the Fold.

The Green Door is comprised of Mike Carnahan (lead vocals/guitar) and Vanessa Wolter (percussion). Ably assisting are Reese Abell (bass), Evan Wardell (guitar) and Devin Triplett (electric organ). Formed in San Francisco in 2008, The Green Door started as a project between Wolter and Carnahan. They began writing and recording a series of songs blending the raw, desert sounds reminiscent of Spaghetti Westerns. Also they combined the uncompromising rhythms of 1960s garage and acid rock. As a result the music forms a harmonic force of American myth and counter-culture ideology, best described as “Western psychedelic rock.” Imagine wild 1960s rock ‘n’ roll driving through the desert to meet the analog spirits of psychedelia.
