“New Direction” by Walter Di Bello eases into a reggae-infused groove, using the backbeat to pull the listener into a trance. This song is full of international flavor, and I hear some touches of raga music. There is a wide variety of instruments on the song, from from lush guitars to strings and all backed by the sparse, minimalist backbeat. All these sounds come together to form a cohesive, colorful song with lyrics that point, almost prophesying towards the future. The way the two vocals harmonize with each other reminds me of middle eastern music. These harmonized vocals are an interesting musical choice, as most musicians would just have one single vocal line. But, this helps make the song more interesting and intriguing, differentiating it even farther from they typical songwriter and indie fare that occupies the unsigned music landscape at this point. Overall, “New Direction” is a vibrant song that sounds unlike anything I’ve heard yet.
