Two next wave talents from the Good As Gold Records roster team up to heighten and amplify each other’s burgeoning reputations. Causier shares his brand new single ‘So Far’, which features his labelmate Erin LeCount.
With ‘So Far’, Causier uses dreamy, laidback bedroom pop as the prism to share two different perspectives on a casual relationship that could become more… if the couple can somehow rise to face their vulnerabilities. His half-spoken topline possesses a rap-like staccato as he talks of taking their connection to the next level, but there’s also a palpable air of melancholy that indicates his hopes might be in vain. And then Erin LeCount’s soothing vocal admits a willingness to push things forwards – but with the disclaimer that the only way their relationship can prosper is to quit playing games, rip the bandage off and take a chance on fresh heartbreak.
Written by Amil Raja, Cuasier, Erin LeCount, Scottie Thompson and Thomas McMinn, it was produced by RJ and Huna.
Erin explains, “So Far is a song about the realisation that young love is finite. Each relationship will be different, but they all start and end in similar ways. Mainly, with a conversation. The lyrics are the dialogue of a a couple once infatuated but now dysfunctional. Tired of their relationship the couple realise they must stop playing games, “rip the bandage off” and part ways”.
Causier adds, “So Far was written when reflecting on the similarities and differences between relationships in my life. Erin wrote her verse in the studio with myself and Amil in Shadwell. Her lyrics are response to mine from the perspective of the other half of a dysfunctional couple”.
The uncertain emotions of the song are encapsulated in the contrasting aesthetic styles of the accompanying video. Gloomy, shadowed shots of Causier evoke the song’s inner loneliness, but the late summer sun of a shared day on Dymchurch Beach in Kent suggests that their future could stretch into the autumn months. The video was directed by Milan Kroschewski.
Causier and Erin LeCount previously teased the release of ‘So Far’ by sharing a series of snapshot images and intriguingly mysterious notes on social media.
As ‘So Far’ suggests, issues of miscommunication and loneliness are prevalent themes amongst Causier’s emerging body of work. The Leicester-based singer, songwriter and producer’s previous songs have tapped into feelings such as adapting to try to accept an unrequited love (‘Vitamins’), having the emotional fragility to want to disconnect from a digital world (‘Brick Phone’), and wanting to be more than the late night back-up plan (‘Stop Calling’). His influences flow between the contemporary and the classic: from Brent Faiyaz, Noname and Vegyn back to Prince, Jeff Buckley and The Beatles.
20-year-old Erin LeCount’s music is similarly ripe with pain, yet her sound is markedly different: alt-pop with cinematic ambition and ethereal atmospherics, with distant echoes of Fiona Apple, Lorde and the xx. Her first releases, compiled in her debut EP ‘Soft Skin, Restless Bones’, inspired Wonderland to praise her “ability to navigate complex emotions with an introspective touch” while Clash highlighted her “autobiographical storytelling, her form of songwriting thrives on honesty, acting as a kind of mirror to her inner life.”
