Fracktura
The uneasiness that envelopes you when listening to the opening track of Oculus may remind you of the same feeling when listening to Penderecki. The music of Fracktura is dark, progressive and avant-garde. As a result, Oculus is a challenging listen, but worthwhile with its incorporation of jazz, classical, rock and experimental. The lyrics of the EP are concerned with the relationship between the individual persona and one’s true inner self. Starting off with “You”, this lead track is mainly voice, lending it a medieval feeling. Karis Tucker has a stark, somewhat somber, voice that is perfect for this style of music.
Delving into early King Crimson territory…
Moving into a more rock mode, “Gold Spectrum” delves into early King Crimson territory with counterpoint bass lines, Fripp-like guitars and an abrasive sax solo. Continuing in this vein, “The Fear Peddler” combines unearthly synthesizer landscapes with the jazzy percussion & sharp guitar work. Ending with “Identidade”, I have to say Oculus is one of the more experimental rock recordings I’ve heard in a while. And Fracktura pulls it off quite nicely with great sound and production. Most notable are André Machado on guitars and Henry Conde on keyboards. Due to all these elements, their new EP is an enjoyable, deep exploration into mind and music.

Fracktura formed as a musical entity in 2016. After years of collaboration and experiments, Fracktura’s first single, “Reality”, was released. The band encompass the dirty sonority and instrumentation of Rock and Jazz. They also embrace the unsettling atmosphere of Expressionist Music. The 2017 EP Oculus is the most recent release. Next, Fracktura’s music has become the official soundtrack for the YouTube channel, Canal Quimera. This is an ongoing project containing a series of short films that express much of Fracktura’s essence through images. Diogo Oliveira, prominent Brazilian filmmaker, is also Fracktura’s official lyricist since “Reality”. He is once again working with the band on their upcoming full-length album.
