What is being called “a departure to an even sweeter beginning,” Gone Sugar Die is a new dirt-pop group. They are made up of former members from The Bravery (Mike Hindert and Anthony Burulcich), 3OH!3 and Teenage Wrist (Marshall Gallagher). As well as Canadian songwriter, Patrick McWilliams.
GSD was created, almost by accident, when McWilliams met Hindert via email. He was trying to become a part of Hinderts record label, Merrifield Records. After exchanging emails and talking a bit, they brought in Burulcich, the drummer, and Gallagher, the guitarist and producer. Therefore, creating Gone Sugar Die and they’re cheeky synth-punk, music.
“Heartbreak Jewelry” is Gone Sugar Die’s first single. This synth-punk/pop track tells the story of a girl who is unable to achieve happiness. Left alone, she only has the jewelry that guys from past relationships have bought her; serving as constant reminders to the heartbreak she has been through.
GSD fuses all their abilities, experiences, and sounds from their times in other groups to form a unique sound of synth-pop and early 2000s punk rock. You can hear the piano keys and electric production filling in gaps between the bridges. While the guitar leads the way with a sick quick solo coming in at the 2:25 mark. From here the song is taken into a climax that ties all these elements together to form their sweet sound.
