London-based producer and singer-songwriter Liza Lo has shared a new single titled “Gipsy Hill”. The single follows her recent tracks “What I Used To Do“, “Confiarme“, which she recently released a live performance video for, and “A Messenger” – her debut for independent analogue specialist label, Gearbox Records (home to Abdullah Ibrahim, Binker & Moses, Thiago Nassif, Levitation Orchestra, Graham Costello, and more).
Having recently completed a sold-out EU / UK tour with Australian indie-folk songwriter Harrison Storm as well as short UK headline run, Liza has been on a rapid word-of-mouth ascent with shows across both London and her hometown of Amsterdam. The new single follows her self-released “Flourish” EP, which saw her earn widespread playlist support and early plaudits at both press and radio, for her tender and meditative take on indie-folk.
Drawing inspiration from the likes of Alice Phoebe Lou, Julia Jacklin, and The Staves, Liza Lo’s sound meets an intersection where gentle folk-inspired instrumentation meets wistful indie-pop. Inspired by Liza’s five-years living in South London, “Gipsy Hill” focusses on the feeling of slow separation from a place that feels like home. The forlorn tracks sees Liza’s stirring vocal ruminate over the top of stripped back acoustic guitar and gentle string arrangements that swell into a poignant rush of melancholy.
Speaking on the writing of the single, Liza says: “Throughout these 5 years I lost many of my close-knit relationships altered here, from true best friendship, to my parents marriage, to my own romantic love. It’s a deeply sorrowful
song that describes things from my childhood kitchen, to my best friend’s porch and my insular communication after coping to learn with all this change. I hope this song finds some kind of connection with people, it’s heartbreaking but I guess love is truly just everything in life and that’s why it hits home. A song for the recently brokenhearted, a song for the people that have had to get to learn to live life differently when suddenly losing their best friend to brain injury, this is Gipsy Hill.”
To mark the release of the new single Liza has also released a new 7″ vinyl via Gearbox Records featuring “Gipsy Hill” and her previous single “What I Used To Do” – it will be available exclusively as live merch or direct from the label.
Liza Lo has also announced a run of November tour dates in support of Steph Strings. The dates will follow her headline record store tour in October playing in-store sets across the country. Full dates below:
