Paula Tartell, a Brooklyn-based producer, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and political organizer is has released much-anticipated debut single, “Canary,” under the project PAULA T. A former concert pianist, Tartell has been making songs in her bedroom for five years, reluctant until now to share them.
But “Canary” sings and soars. This high-tempo, drum-driven song blends a kaleidoscope of raw
punk energy and experimental bedroom production. Alongside an energetic live band, Canary
features manipulated samples—like bird chirps transformed into synth-like textures—highlighting
Tartell’s quirky, intricate production style. With sweet, playful vocals and songwriting, this
unrequited-love-song invites vulnerability while exploring PAULA T’s own fears of rejection.
“‘Canary’ is about a demoralizing pattern I’ve found myself in: dating men afraid to be in love,”
says Tartell. “For me personally, the vulnerability of sharing my art is way more terrifying than
falling in love will ever feel. The canary as a symbol is an invocation for people to keep sharing
themselves with the universe despite the prospect of rejection.”
The song also includes virtuosic performances from Eli Heath (producer, bass guitar, mixing engineer), Jake Ford (electric guitar), and Addie Vogt (drums). With all recycled materials—sustainability as a source of
creation and collective liberation—she designed her vibrant canary costume with Nikolai
Mishler (YES theater).
