Toby Johnson’s latest singles ‘Plot Twist’ and ‘California’ have found the singer-songwriter evolve his sound, balancing an uplifting pop edge with melancholy lyricism. The continuing support of BBC Introducing and a New Noise profile from Wonderland have kept him in the spotlight, while a range of new streaming playlists have introduced a new wave of followers as he builds upon an early career total of 15 million streams.
Both songs feature on Toby Johnson’s brand new EP ‘Chaos’, which is out now on Mahogany Records. It is released alongside its new single and title track, as well as an official video.
The song ‘Chaos’ encapsulates everything that Toby does so well. The verses are calm, confessional and delivered with a voice with a maturity beyond his age. And then the hook takes flight, countering the positive feel of the music with lyrics that express the challenges that we’ve faced. Toby’s tender tone then offers another counterpoint, his soft, heartening vocal feeling like an express of hope and solidarity in trying times.
Toby says, “‘Chaos’ is the journey we’ve all been on over the past couple of years. The difficult times that we’ve faced, yet, continuing to hold onto a hope that we can see it through, and knowing that we will someday. I wanted to speak of impending road trips, losing love, and the turmoil of being stuck indoors.
‘Chaos’ itself refers to Chaos theory (the butterfly effect) and how something as small and delicate as a butterfly’s wings can cause hurricanes across the world. I’ve learnt that If our own future can be so easily predetermined by the minor decisions in the present, then appreciating each and every moment as if they’re our last is important. Despite the challenges I explore throughout this EP, I want you to come out the other side feeling a little stronger, just like I have. Life’s a weird little journey, but with a bit of time, patience and self-love, it can only get better.”
The video for ‘Chaos’ is Toby’s latest collaboration with Big Fat Creative. It plays simply to the song’s strengths, with Tobyshown in the form of a silhouette during the verses before the intensity of his performance is spotlighted during the chorus.
The other new song on the ‘Chaos’ EP is its closing track ‘Lost’, which possesses an upbeat, live folk-rock vibe. Toby’s collaborators on the four-song collection include Jonathan Quarmby (Lewis Capaldi, Tom Walker, James Arthur) and Leo Stannard (KC Lights, Camelphat).
‘Chaos’ is Toby’s fourth EP and follows last year’s ‘Things I Should’ve Said’. He has previously toured with Jack Savoretti and Dotan, and received Radio 2 airplay. Now expanding the scope of his sound beyond influences such as Nick Drake, Passenger and Paul Simon, Toby Johnson is poised to be discovered by a broader audience in the near future.
