Tones And I BREAKTHROUGH SMASH ‘DANCE MONKEY’ CLIMBS TO NUMBER 1 ON OFFICIAL SINGLES CHART

The Australian sensation Tones And I single Dance Monkey out via Parlophone takes this week’s top spot on the Official UK Singles Chart, marking the end of a nine-week climb up the Top 100. It has raced past the 250 million streams landmark, having previously crashed into #8 on the GlobalSpotifyChart and become the most Shazamed track in the world.

‘Dance Monkey’ first entered the singles chart at Number 82 in August and this week leaps six places to Number 1 with 50,000 chart sales, including 5.1 million streams.

In her native Australia, Tones & I is enjoying a ninth consecutive week at Number 1. Last week Dance Monkey broke the country’s record for most weeks at the summit by an Australian female solo artist, sweeping aside a 32-year-old record set by Kylie Minogue’s Locomotion.

In the UK, Dance Monkey is the first Number 1 by an Australian artist in five years, since Iggy Azalea’s Problem with Ariana Grande.

‘Dance Monkey’ caps a spectacular rise in Tones And I’s unorthodox journey. Originally from the Mornington Peninsula on the outskirts of MelbourneTones And I travelled to ByronBay early in 2018 to take her chance at busking. Overwhelmed by the size of the crowds she attracted, Tones quit her job to move there permanently, living in her van as she looking for a bigger opportunity in music.

She first broke through in her homeland with her debut single ‘Johnny Run Away’, which quickly reached Platinum status. ‘Dance Monkey’ and ‘Never Seen The Rain’ then confirmed her rising star status, with all three songs featuring on her debut EP ‘The Kids Are Coming’. Meanwhile, her set at SplendourInTheGrass attracted the biggest crowd of an opening act in the festival’s history – with 20,000 fans present when she took to the stage at midday.

Tones And I is currently embarking upon a sold-out tour which covers AustraliaNewZealandNorthAmerica and Europe. Her first two London shows, at TheLexington (November15th) and OsloHackney (November16th), sold-out over two months in advance.
