MOMO. is a London-based Brazilian multi-instrumentalist whose music moves across borders. With roots in Brazil but a life lived in Angola, the US, Spain, Portugal, and now the UK, MOMO. crafts a sound that transcends place.
His forthcoming eighth album, Tum Tum Tum, released via Agogo Records, is a testament to sustained creation. The artist explains, “Twenty years and eight albums in, it reflects the quiet resilience of remaining in motion, refining a musical language over time and committing to craft as a lifelong practice rather than a moment.” Recorded live in South London, it captures a band deeply attuned to one another. Built around the rhythm section that toured his previous album Gira, the sessions centre on presence and interaction, shaping a strong rhythmic foundation for the record. The arrangements remain open and responsive, allowing space, feel, and attention to guide each track forward.
New single “Canto de Aldeia,” co-written with Nina Miranda of Smoke City, unfolds as a bilingual dialogue between the two artists, reflecting the project’s movement between worlds. MOMO. explains, “The song evokes a bright, utopian childhood, playful, communal and grounded in nature, expressed through imagery of sun, sand and breeze.”
For Nina Miranda, the track also became deeply tied to memory and family. “I was invited by MOMO. to sing on this track just before travelling to Brazil. With his daughter Leonora’s birthday coming up and his father visiting, it brought back memories of my own Brazilian childhood, family gatherings with bonfires, accordions, singing and dancing, multicoloured paper decorations, dusty floors, warm coconut milk, corn with cinnamon, and happy adults.”
She continues, “For me, the song reflects the child within us, the desire to play, to love, and to be loved.” Speaking on the collaboration itself, Nina adds, “MOMO.’s music feels very atmospheric, evoking Brazil, Africa, and a sense of connection between places. I approached my voice as a contrast — something more airy and feminine against his grounded, textured sound.”
Tum Tum Tum’s sonic richness is shaped by longstanding collaborators like Regis Damasceno (bass) and Caetano Malta (guitar), with UK jazz trombonist Rosie Turton adding expressive lift. As MOMO. says, “It’s about playing together until the sound reveals itself—giving the music time to settle and breathe.”
MOMO. has been acclaimed by NPR as “an artist who transcends place,” with Mojo praising his previous record among its Top 10 World Albums. His forthcoming work feels assured and alive, offering music shaped by travel, time, and accumulated experience. It carries the assurance of an artist who understands that continuity itself can be a form of strength.
