Helga Arvesten
First and foremost, Helga Arvesten stuns with her vocal range and agility. While reminding one of Kate Bush or Bjork, she displays an emotional intensity and precision of someone much older and more experienced. I love her latest trio of releases since 2016’s EP Entering the Ozone. Like Bush, Bjork and sometimes David Bowie, her songwriting is unafraid to explore unusual structures and eschew pop conventions. She mines the deeper territory of her emotions and experience. For instance “Don’t Speak” creates a raw, uncomfortable soundscape concerning human relationships that is underpinned by a beautiful piano melody and elegant production. Also open and vulnerable, “Naked” describes another aspect of the human experience with a gentle touch. An impressive collection of songs for 2017.

“Like all my music, and all things I create, it is vital that it evokes a reaction from the listener. These songs are my emotions and thoughts in their rawest form. That’s what makes it extra exciting to share. I could tell you how I felt at a certain time in my life, but the music hopefully takes you to the exact moment and entraps you in the emotions.”
