The esteemed San Franciscan trio KARMACODA unveiled their latest album You and I on 26 July, 2024 via Sola Musa Music. The timeless trio comprises Jessica Ford (vocals), Brett Crockett aka B. (vocals and producer), and Japanese-American multi-instrumentalist Eric Matsuno (bass and unique elements). With their expansive discography and numerous awards, KARMACODA is known for their genre-blending approach as they’ve explored electronica, chill, trip-hop, R&B, rock, and dream pop in their two decade career. Their ever-evolving sound is a reflection of their ability to embrace change, as they merge R&B and jazz lounge, drawing comparisons to powerhouse artists such as Adele, Lana Del Rey and of course Massive Attack.
KARMACODA has garnered praise from notable tastemakers including Wonderland Magazine, CLASH Magazine, NOTION, EARMILK, Magnetic Mag, Hotpress, and METAL Magazine. They’ve also received airplay from NPR Music and Irish National radio RTÉ 2XM. The trio’s work has also made its way into various film and TV scores, they’ve won the Hermes Creative Awards (Platinum) for their ‘Lo-Fi Girl‘video and ‘Make Me The One‘ video which resulted in one Unglued Music Video (Gold) and three Davey Awards for Video Entertainment, Best Use of Music and Art Direction (all Silver).
The album focus track ‘Hold’ perfectly encapsulates the mastery of Karmacoda. From beginning to end it’s a compelling listen that addresses the yearning and pain of not being with the one you love. With honest, stirring lyrics it’s a powerful love letter that boldly expresses the words many aren’t brave enough to say. The instrumental arrangement is just as introspective as the lyrics, with gentle guitar riffs, a steady yet moving drum beat, a sparkling tambourine in the background and Jessica’s otherworldly vocals.
Brett (aka B.) shared: “Hold is about a longing for a love that what once was, maybe, and thoughts on what it could still be. We each have such thoughts and memories in our lives, “what could have been if we had held on to what we were, imagined or not, “hold on to me, hold on to we.”
