Nocturnal Animals
Though drawing comparisons to Green Day, I felt Nocturnal Animals reminds me of the now defunct Capital Lights, especially with the crisp vocals of Mason Jones. Laced with plenty of hooks, a sharp sense of lyricism and powerful melodies, the band really shines on “4 AM”. This tune blew me away with its melancholy guitar tones mirroring the clever, yet somewhat elusive lyrics. An almost perfect rock/pop song, highlighted with scintillating guitar passages and a mixture of styles.
Not any less evocative, the three remaining songs on the EP contain many of the same qualities, especially “Teeth”. With its foundation of driving percussion and heavy bassline, the band still manages to draw you into the very personal story being told. Also notable is the voice of Jones as he slices through the heavy barrage of instruments, never losing the ability to entrance us. As 2017 rolls to an end, Dark Lit Places climbs high in my favorites of the year.
