Enigmatic Italian producer Panoram has unveiled another spectacularly crafted offering titled ‘Cameos’, via the Balmat imprint. Panoram has built a formidable reputation within the global IDM community over the last decade for his left-field compositions, and boasts over a million streams across platforms. He has consistently caught the attention of tastemaker publications like Pitchfork, Mixmag, Electronic Groove, Rumore Magazine, The Ransom Note and The Vinyl Factory, while he received airplay from National radio stations RTÉ 2FM, SBS Chill and NPR Music. He has recorded multiple times for NTS and Boiler Room too. Additionally, he has appeared alongside the likes of Kraftwerk and Gold Panda at Sònar Festival in Barcelona. Notably, Thom Yorke included a track from Panoram’s album Pianosequenza Vol.1 in a playlist he curated for Sonos.
Hailing from and based in Rome, not much is known about Raffaele Martirani, the mystifying figure behind Panoram. He has been part of the project Amen Dunes for the past decade, touring extensively across the U.S. and Europe with the band, performing at renowned venues and festivals like Primavera Sound, Pitchfork Festival, Roskilde, Koko in London, as well as the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles.
Under the Panoram alias, he’s released on noteworthy labels like Firecracker, Running Back, and his own Wandering Eye. His catalogue is a discerning collection of playful, intentional experiments awash with a smorgasbord of stylistic etchings, from abstract pop, classical experiments, hazy lounge, detuned synths, cyborg funk and more.
‘Cameos’ aptly follows suit, with its hallucinogenic atmosphere which stirs up feelings of contentment, and child-like curiosity. It’s sure to resonate with fans of Aphex Twin and Susumu Yokota, as well as Oneohtrix Point Never. The single trickles ever so gently upon the listener’s ear, and begins with a serenely magnetizing keyboard motif, underscored with dainty, aberrant synths which draw the listener in. The production then gives way to a range of hypnotising choral vocals, which oscillate throughout the track, creating a sweeping ebb and flow from beginning to end. If anything, ‘Cameos’ showcases the brilliance of Panoram and his artistic fervour, along with his ability to colour outside of the lines and consistently stay true to his own vision.
Speaking on the single, Panoram shared: “The whole song is all about the idea of a cameo. All sounds appearing and disappearing quickly. I imagined children jumping out of their seats shouting vocal tones and flutes played by people walking by.”
