RED CLOVER Release ‘That Was Love’ Single

Having spent years carving their own creative sphere, developing their sound and designing rousing melodies, indie-pop act Red Clover are ready to show the world their first single That Was Love, from their debut EP Into the Night. 

The trio describe their work as 80’s soundtrack-inspired synth-pop that dances around dreamy hooks. They’ve a dynamic sensibility similar to Chvrches and Electric Youth, but with Red Clover there’s an introspective edge akin to the likes of London Grammar. 

Red Clover originally began as a solo song writing project for James Beattie after leaving Brisbane’s hard rock scene. After composing the songs on piano and guitar, James asked former drummer Jesse Zrinyi to come on board to help with the creation of synthesised instrumentation. A year into the project, they heard a demo from Sydney-based vocalist Alana Evans covering Sam Smith’s I’m Not The Only One and were blown away. They got in touch, flew her up to Brisbane and recorded the EP together. 

That Was Love was recorded in Brisbane at West End’s Newstead Productions studio with the assistance of sound engineer Daniel Newstead. James describes That Was Love as a song about someone who is struggling to move on in life after ending a love/hate relationship. Unlike the other predominantly 80’s synth-pop infused tracks on the upcoming EP, That Was Love was written with the elevated spirit of 90’s pop, its emotional resonance a freeing declaration to live in the moment and let go of the past.
