SKERRYVORE’S NEW ALBUM ‘BEAUTIFUL MISTAKES’ IS OUT NOW

Skerryvore rose to new heights in their 20-year career when their previous album ‘Tempus’ became their first Top 40 record, and hit #1on both the Folk Albums and Scottish Albums charts. Now the multiple time winners of Scotland’s Live Act of the Year award continue to go from strength-to-strength with today’s release of ‘Beautiful Mistakes’ – their most ambitious and personal work to date.

The band embraced a newfound freedom in their creative approach. Working for the first time with Jamie Squire (The 1975), they latched on to the chemistry in the studio instead of focusing too much on the details. Meanwhile, lead vocalist and songwriter Alec Dalglish was delving deep for some truly introspective songwriting, making himself more vulnerable than he ever had before. Its themes also come from shifting perspectives, its topics spanning the emotional heart that the band is renowned for: love, loss, roots, nostalgia and hope.

Alec Dalglish says, “Making this album has been a much more organic process, where we often started acoustically, quite small, with the idea that the listener should feel like they’re in the room with us. Some of the songs still ended up sounding huge, but I think there’s a maturity there, and we really captured the live element of it all.”

The album’s singles – the unrestrained energy of ‘Fly’, the emotionally resonant ‘Singing Up In Heaven’ and the stunning Tamzene duet‘While I’m Still Breathing’ – have captured that feeling alongside their ever-fervent emotions and a fresh pop accessibility. That latter trait shines in the new focus track ‘Second Chance’, the ultimate kiss-song with an irrepressibly catchy chorus that’s perfect for singalongs at the band’s renowned live shows.

Alec adds, “I guess this was my Taylor Swift moment, saying ‘I’m breaking up with you, we’re never getting back together’. That’s something I’ve certainly never done before, but it definitely felt cathartic.”

The first path on the album’s journey is the gorgeous, evocative instrumental ‘Scaranish’, named after the village in Tiree, Scotland, on the island that founding members Daniel and Martin Gillespie call home. Stops along the way include the stomping ire of the bagpipe-assisted celtic rock of ‘The Game’, which flows into the serene beauty of the future first dance love song ‘In Your Eyes’. Those emotions become more troubled on ‘Oh My Love’, a gentle lament for a love that’s no longer there, while the mournful flute and cascading piano of ‘Easy That Way’ takes another angle on the realisation that love often isn’t forever.

All roads lead to the title track,   resplendent pared-back number, the band demonstrate their technical abilities with ease; each instrument is presented as its own character. Accepting that life’s experiences are often fleeting or flawed,  It’s a beautiful and powerful sentiment to end the album on, a reminder of Skerryvore’s talent for speaking to our very souls.

Physical copies of ‘Beautiful Mistakes’ are now available to buy HERE. The band’s official store offers signed CD, black vinyl, signed black-and-white sunburst vinyl, and eight cassette variants – and themed around and signed by a different band member. There is also a limited edition, hand-stamped CD which adds two bonus tracks which were recorded live at Glasgow Barrowland –  £1 from every copy of this format will be donated to Street Soccer Scotland, helping support their life-changing work through football.

Skerryvore commence the ‘Beautiful Mistakes’ album tour in Edinburgh tonight, and their upcoming shows also feature a very intimate sold out live session at The Park Bar, Glasgow.
