Rising IDM producer Textbook Maneuver shared a new single ‘Places‘, via hisLife Science Records imprint. The track follows a monumental remix of his track ‘Adrenaline Slip’ by the legendary µ‑Ziq, which premiered on the globally renowned Wonderland Magazine. With nearly 150,000 streams across platforms to date, the project has steadily drawn the attention of the global IDM and experimental electronic community. Interviews with Magnetic Magazine, Illustrate Magazine, features on WWAM (We Write About Music), Music For All (Brazil), and Good Music Radar have already highlighted the project’s immersive debut album Adrenaline Slip (2025). It is clear that Textbook Maneuver is emerging as one of experimental electronic music’s most intriguing new figures.
Michael Keane is the Bronx-born, New Jersey-based composer behind the Textbook Maneuver alias. A classically trained pianist with a punk DIY heart, Keane blends cerebral sound design with cinematic storytelling, drawing from a wide palette of influences that stretch from Genesis (Duke era), Rush, and Gary Numan to The Postal Service, U.N.K.L.E., and Phantogram. Under the Textbook Maneuvermoniker, his releases balance the intellectual curiosity of IDM with the emotional resonance of ambient and prog-influenced electronica, offering soundscapes fit for film, television, and interactive media. His music thrives on improvisation and sonic experimentation, refusing easy classification while remaining deeply accessible. With critics comparing his sound to Jon Hopkins and Nils Frahm, listeners are sure to hear echoes of Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, and Autechre.
‘Places’ opens with plaintive piano phrases that unfold into a vast wintery soundscape, steeped in nostalgia. Small, tactile textures adorn and punctuate the spacious synths while sparse, reverberant drums ease the track along to a low, broodingly cinematic outro.
Textbook Maneuver told us: “If you ever have walked through the corridors of a music school, you will hear piano and other instruments resonating from a distance or from behind walls and doors. This past October, I had just finished releasing some projects and took a break to write something new. As I was composing, I had feelings of nostalgia, echoes of the past, places I have been, walking through music school halls, etc and they all came together into “Places”. I used effects and distortion to bring out that nostalgia. I then went through some old photos from places I have been to create the simple collage for the cover art.”
