zenxienz
zenxienz has been reviewed in the past as being a proponent of the new ‘Weird EDM’ movement. I have my doubts that his new album Cosmosis is EDM, seemingly more like a psychedelic rock project of the highest order. Though there are many electronica elements flowing through the music, what most impresses is the range and complexity of these songs. Due to the warm synthesizer sounds, I felt drawn into this emotional journey.
Incorporating Eastern rhythms and other World music influences, tracks like “Flutter” and “Dao” dazzle with their lush soundscapes. “Chain Reaction” comes closest to EDM, but still retains that haunting, melancholy tone. Airy vocals hover over the gripping rhythms, a jungle of percussion and synth experimentation of “My Grip Weakens”. And some of these tracks just flat-out rock, like the frantic “Sapiens”. I especially like modern electronica sounds weaving around some 70s-like synth soloing. As a result, Cosmosis is an earnest exploration of consciousness that grips one with its emotional playing and sleek production.

Music is a journey of the mind. At least, that’s how Hong Kong-born musician, producer, and songwriter, Cameron Williamson, aka zenxienz, sees it. Growing up on the island of Kaua‘i in Hawai‘i, the tropical landscape fed his developing artistic mind. Cameron’s music has been described as psychedelic rock meets dnb. A two-year finalist in the International Songwriting Competition and a Na Hoku Hanohano-nominated songwriter, Cameron has a knack for capturing the experiences that that stem from finding opportunities in the obstacles. With a wide range of influences from the purely electronic to eastern and tribal sounds, incorporating nearly everything in between, zenxienz pushes the boundaries of EDM, jazz, and psychedelia with every subsequent release. Furthermore, each new song blends internal demons and rediscovered passion into a work of art.
