Nachtschade

Nachtschade is one of those bands that is hard to define. Sometimes like Grand Funk, but more spacious, then similar to Syd-era Pink Floyd, at other times Beatlesque. Basically, they are just damned good.   The band is inspired by 60s and 70s rock music, but their modern sensibilities plant them firmly in the 21st century. Their new single, “Birdman”, is an idiosyncratic number with a boppy beat, ragtime piano and curious lyrics. Seemingly the narrator is obsessed with the large number of our avian friends in the world. Also from their album Maskerade are several other quirky tunes like “Third Step” and “The Hermit”.

“I Don’t Settle For Less” features an over-arching, bluesy guitar that winds through the lively melody and understated vocals of Maarten Stok. The rocker “The Fool” features a delicious organ and guitar battle by Reid Steenuis and Bram van den Brekel. “Staircase” is an epic sounding piece with a great horn section mixed in the jam. Other highlights are “Endless Dance” with its mid-70s pop feel & harmony vocals and “Cozy Boxes”, a mellow exploration of depression and isolation. Maskerade is a great album with endless inventiveness, just like the band.
