Nian Tong Captures the Slow Fade of Unresolved Feelings in New EP “Gradually”

Nian Tong is a London-based singer-songwriter, producer, and composer whose music blends emotionally driven indie pop with warm harmonies and a whimsical melodic sensibility inspired by 1960s and 1970s pop. Rooted in personal storytelling, his songs transform modern experiences of love, intimacy, and disconnection into something playful, sincere, and quietly devastating beneath the sweetness.

Originally focused on writing and producing for others, Nian’s transition into performing came gradually. Writing lyrics became a turning point, pushing him to tell his own stories in his own voice. He developed his vocals during the pandemic and released his debut EP in 2023. Relocating to London later that year and immersing himself in the city’s live music and art scene fully cemented his evolution from behind-the-scenes creator to frontman.

His second EP Gradually expands on the emotional world introduced in his earlier work, unfolding as a carefully structured journey through modern romance shaped by distance, ambiguity, and personal growth. Written largely during his first year in London, the project draws from a deeply personal experience of a relationship that never fully materialised, capturing the confusion of being ghosted alongside the quieter process of moving forward. While rooted in a clear, linear emotional arc, the EP reflects how unresolved feelings don’t disappear all at once, instead fading slowly and resurfacing in unexpected moments.

Opening track “What’s On Your Mind” sets the tone with its blend of modern and nostalgic influences, pairing a hip-hop-inspired beat with string quartet textures, mellotron, and a doo-wop-style piano pattern. The result is a sound that feels both playful and bittersweet, mirroring the emotional push and pull of hope and uncertainty at the beginning of the story.

“I Shouldn’t Have Talked to You” follows with a stark shift in tone. A stripped-back piano ballad, it captures the moment of confrontation and the clarity that comes with it. Written after an impulsive decision to visit the person who had ghosted him, the track holds both frustration and tenderness in equal measure. As Nian puts it, “It’s about recognizing someone’s weakness and loving them anyway, even as you realize that you need to move on.”

The title track “Gradually” marks a turning point, reflecting on the slow process of letting go. Driven by acoustic guitar, layered synths, and a steady rhythm section, the track contrasts clean, grounded verses with more expansive, textured choruses that echo the feeling of thoughts circling and overlapping. Inspired by the idea that “you are gradually fading in the back of my head,” it captures the shift from emotional fixation to something quieter and more resolved.

Closing track “Whatever You Do” brings a sense of lightness and forward motion. Built around a Motown-inspired melody and chord progression but realised through synth-led production, it reflects the cautious optimism of stepping into something new. There’s a sense of excitement running through it, balanced by vulnerability, as Nian embraces the uncertainty of connection while hoping for patience and understanding.

Produced entirely by Nian himself, Gradually also reflects a subtle evolution in his sound. Moving away from the fuller live arrangements of his earlier work, the EP leans into a lighter, more modern palette shaped by synths and samples, while still holding onto the melodic richness and retro sensibilities that define his writing. With contributions recorded remotely by musicians across the US, Mexico, and Spain, and a mix of collaborators including Grammy-winning engineer Darrell Thorp, the project balances intimacy with a broader, more contemporary sonic scope.

Before stepping into the spotlight as an artist, Nian built an impressive career behind the scenes. He has worked with major Chinese artists including Karencic, ICE, and Kenji Wu, collaborated as a musical theatre orchestrator with the National Theatre of China, and composed original stage works, including Instant Luv Noodles, which has been staged in both the UK and Japan. Alongside this, his own releases have accumulated over 7 million streams across platforms in China, with his song “I Do Love You” used over 50,000 times on Chinese TikTok.

With Gradually on the horizon and momentum building internationally, Nian Tong is emerging as a distinctive voice in modern indie pop.
