| NPG Records and Paisley Park Enterprises, in partnership with Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, announce the 10th anniversary of Prince’s HITnRUN phase one and HITnRUN phase two. For the first time, both HITnRUN phase one (as a 1LP on black vinyl) and HITnRUN phase two (as a double LP on black vinyl), will be available on vinyl, and the titles will be back in print on CD for the first time since it’s initial run in 2015. Prince first used the term “Hit n Run” to describe pop-up shows that he would perform throughout his career. In the summer of 2015, Prince announced that he would release an album by the same name — and that “things were about to get experimental, weird, and super funky.” Released on September 7, 2015, HITnRUN phase one was Prince’s 38th studio album that featured all new material and was recorded in the two years leading up to release. It was primarily a collaboration with Joshua Welton and marked the first time that Prince worked with a co-producer. There were also contributions from THIRDEYEGIRL, Rita Ora, Judith Hill, Lianne La Havas and Curly Fryz. The album peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and at 70 on the Billboard 200. Released just three months after phase one, HITnRUN phase two was the 39th and final studio album released during Prince’s lifetime on December 12, 2015. Credited as “produced, arranged, composed and perf4med by Prince & The New Power Generation,” the album came at a heated cultural moment and was deeply rooted in the pressing social issues of the time. HITnRUN phase 2 was released just days before a Baltimore judge declared a mistrial in the case of William Porter, an officer who had been charged in the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray. It was an incident that Prince addressed in moving detail in the album’s opening track, “Baltimore,” which had been released earlier that year as a single. The album also included several previously released tracks, some of which had been recorded much earlier than 2015. “BLACK MUSE,” for example, was initially tracked at Paisley Park in 2010, and “XTRALOVEABLE” was first released as a single in 2011.
