The new single “Raise Up” by New Yorker Joel Phil launches a great, new chapter in his life and career.  An upbeat, energetic pop song, “Raise Up” equally pulls from his Latin background as well as house-inspired dance music.  With its positive message of independence and awareness, the song serves as a all-purpose anthem for human rights.  His smooth voice glides pleasantly over the liquid groove while background vocals from Sebastian Rivera underscore his powerful vocals.  Clever lyrics combined with a pulsing beat highlight a talent that will likely dominate 2018.

Bio:

Many elements collided to result in Joel Phil‘s music career and the ways that its evolved.  The son of Spanish immigrants,  he was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. A running theme throughout his life has been his identity– he’s always looked ‘ambiguous’, and identifying with peer groups in school was never easy. He carries this struggle with him proudly as he develops his music.

Joel wrote and performed his songs when he was a mere 10 years old. Despite having limited  resources, his local community center helped sponsor his early endeavors as a musician. At age 12 he wrote a Christmas song for the center called “Oh Christmas”. At age 13, Joel performed alongside none other than Joey Lawrence at the Macy’s
Day Parade, proving the future to be bright for the young musician. Joel’s music career took a halt as he headed into adolescence, as various circumstances prompted him to focus on his studies. But music has always been inherent in Joel’s life– and they found their way back to each other.

Joel recorded his latest album in Colombia, which he chose “because [he] was comfortable with the people there”– he was connected to a support system through his best friends and found it to be a nourishing experience. Joel’s said that his “job is to bring our lyrics to life”- and doing that is impossible without help from honest and sincere people. Influenced by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin, and Amy Winehouse, Joel uses his ever-evolving music to connect with his identity, which is confusing, just like so many of ours– but not something to be feared.
